Can anyone tell me...

...why a supermarket would be checking whether people are over 21 to buy alcohol in the UK?

Has the law changed since I've been away? Can 18, 19 and 20 year-olds no longer spend their student loans on gin and Aftershocks, as I used to do?

It's just a sad PC attempt at reducing the shame for all concerned. Quite what the girl on the checkout in the article was on, however, I cannot say.

Don't know about the age thing - maybe it's a voluntary meassure at Morrison's. Apparently they make a point of asking really "everybody" their age so that no one can be offended be they were or were not asked (women can be quite sensitive about that - "Why did you ask her for the ID and not me? I look at least 3 years younger than that fat old cow.").

One day, I'm sure, pubs will have toilet assistants asking everyone their gender before pointing them into the right direction ("Good evening, Sir. Are you male or female? This way then, please.".)

No. The age at which you can buy alcohol is still 18 but signs in most shops say "If you are lucky enough to look under 21, then please provide ID when purchasing alcohol". This is to help deal avoid the ambigiuity of whether someone is 17 or 18.
